The State Department’s Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC) named Sarah Heidema acting director of the directorate’s Office of Defense Trade Controls Policy, after then-director Ed Peartree accepted a position outside government, DDTC said. The change became effective on Aug. 28. “During this leadership transition,” Rick Koelling is working as acting deputy director of policy in addition to division chief of commodity jurisdictions. DDTC has named Rob Hart acting division chief for regulatory and multilateral affairs to fill in for the position Heidema vacated.
Casey Durst, previously area port director of St. Albans, Vermont, is now the Baltimore Field Office director, CBP said in an Aug. 18 news release. "She oversees CBP border security and trade and travel facilitation operations throughout the mid-Atlantic states," the agency said. Durst replaces Augustine Moore, who is now at CBP headquarters, it said.
Joseph Trulik, executive vice president at Farrow U.S., will take over as president Sept. 1, Farrow's CEO and Chairman Rick Farrow said in an emailed announcement. Trulik joined the company in January (see 1701040007). Current President Tom Kowalski will become senior executive until retiring in 2018, Farrow said.
Katherine Tai has been named chief Democratic trade counsel for the House Ways and Means Committee, the panel’s ranking member, Richard Neal, D-Mass., announced. Tai has been a trade counsel for the committee since 2014, after working in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative’s Office of General Counsel from 2007 to 2014, including as chief counsel for China trade enforcement from 2011 to 2014. “Katherine has proven she has the knowledge and experience to tackle and understand our nation’s most pressing trade issues,” Neal said in a statement. “I am confident she will play an important part in helping Democrats improve our nation’s trade policy in the years ahead.” Committee Democrats announced the departure of former chief Democratic trade counsel Jason Kearns on July 28. President Donald Trump on June 29 nominated Kearns to be a commissioner on the International Trade Commission (see 1706290057).
Bradley Hayes was appointed executive director, Trade Relations, Office of the Commissioner, CBP Acting Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said in an emailed news release. Hayes most recently worked as chief of staff for the Office of Policy at the Department of Homeland Security and was director of congressional and public affairs at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce before then.
American Global Logistics named board chairman Jon Slangerup its new CEO, the company announced July 27. Slangerup is taking over for Jim Briles, who is “stepping down to spend more time with his family,” the announcement says. Slangerup was previously CEO of the Port of Long Beach and president of FedEx Canada. American Global Logistics also named Blake Shumate, previously chief solutions officer, its chief operating officer, the company said.
Philip Gallas joined FisherBroyles as a partner, the law firm said in a news release. Gallas, who previously worked at Nelson Mullins, has "practiced import, export and international trade remedy (antidumping and countervailing duty)" during his career, FisherBroyles said.
Crane Worldwide Logistics added Pete Mento, previously customs and global trade practice leader at Ryan Tax, as vice president of global trade and managed services, Crane said in a July 18 news release (here). "Mento will be responsible for global customs products, using technology and a consultative approach to improve clients’ supply chain efficiencies and leverage regulatory opportunities for Crane Worldwide and their clients," the company said.
Mario Toscano, previously chief deputy clerk at the Court of International Trade, was named acting clerk for CIT, the court said (here). The previous clerk, Tina Potuto Kimble, recently joined Tata Steel Europe (see 1705250022).
Robert Holleyman, deputy U.S. trade representative from 2014 to 2017, is joining Crowell & Moring as a partner in the law firm’s international trade group and will be president of the firm’s international policy and regulatory affairs affiliate, C&M International, Crowell & Moring said in a news release (here). Holleyman is taking over for outgoing C&M President Kate Clemans, who is retiring to join the C&M board with special oversight for sovereign clients, according to the release.
