In a news report to customers, CMA CGM announced that it will gradually discontinue the provision of chassis to truckers, a move it says will generate greater operational efficiency and reduce the environment impact. In line with what has been in force for years in the rest of the world, CMA CGM states that the provision by truckers of their own chassis will give them flexibility and allow them to use it for multiple moves at different terminals, for different lines/services hence removing inefficiencies and improving supply chain process. Press reports indicate that various other lines have made similar announcements.

U.S. Transportation Secretary LaHood announced on July 27, 2010 that the second National Distracted Driving Summit will be held on September 21, 2010, in Washington, DC. To build on the growing momentum sparked by the first summit last fall, Secretary LaHood will convene leading transportation officials, safety advocates, law enforcement, industry representatives, researchers, and victims affected by distraction-related crashes to address challenges and identify opportunities for national anti-distracted driving efforts.
On July 30, 2010, the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Economic Analysis released the first estimate of gross domestic product for the second quarter of 2010. Real GDP grew 2.4 percent at an annual rate in the second quarter, following a gain of 3.7 percent in the first quarter. The annual revision to the national accounts increased the total fall in real GDP during the recession from 3.7 percent to 4.1 percent. The economy has grown 3.2 percent from a year ago. “Today's data shows us that the recession was steeper than initially estimated,” Commerce Secretary Locke said.
On July 26, 2010, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration submitted to the Office of Management and Budget for approval its proposed rule on Driver's Hours of Service. The proposed rule is targeted for publication in October 2010. (On October 26, 2009, Public Citizen, et al. and FMCSA entered into a settlement agreement under which judicial review of the November 19, 2008, final rule on drivers´ hours of service is being held in abeyance pending the publication of a proposed rule reevaluating the issue.)

The DOT's Bureau of Transportation Statistics reports that trade using surface transportation between the U.S. and its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners Canada and Mexico was 39.5 percent higher in May 2010 than in May 2009, reaching $66.8 billion. The 39.5 percent increase was the largest percentage year over year increase in total U.S.-NAFTA trade by surface modes on record back to April 1994.
