The Practising Law Institute plans its yearly “Coping with U.S. Export Controls” seminar Dec. 11-12 in Washington, D.C. The seminar will provide insights on Export Control Reform; sanctions policy; international sanctions developments; the State Department’s proposed brokering rule; new developments in Department of Energy export controls; enforcement; and compliance programs. Mexico's Diario Oficial of Sept. 13, lists notices from the Secretary of the Economy as follows:
Brazil announced a tariff hike for 100 products Sept. 4 that include, among other things, tires, auto parts, kitchenware, footwear, and paper. Members of the MERCOSUR customs union have 15 days from Sept. 6 to object, after which Brazil will be authorized to adopt the measure. The tariff increases will be valid for a period of 12 months, after which they may be renewed for another year. According to Brazil, the increases respect World Trade Organization tariff limits. In remarks during the Sept. 12 opening of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) High-Level Conference on Aviation Security in Montreal, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano urged members of ICAO to approve the enhanced international Standards and Recommended Practices for air cargo and mail security; support the evolution of ICAO’s airport audit program; adopt baseline standards for global border and transportation security; and develop standards for next-generation travel documents. Accompanying Napolitano during the event were Transportation Security Administration Administrator John Pistole, and Assistant Secretary for International Affairs Alan Bersin.
