Immigrations and Customs Enforcement deported a man who conspired to illegally ship highly specialized vacuum pump equipment with nuclear applications from the U.S. to Iran, it said. Amirhossein Sairafi was released from federal prison and immediately deported from Chicago via commercial flight, arriving Jan. 4 in Tehran, Iran.

The Food and Drug Administration issued a proposed rule that would require Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventative Controls (HARPC) at food facilities, with some exceptions, pursuant to its Food Safety and Modernization Act mandate. HARPC would be similar to the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) requirements currently in place for seafood, meat and poultry, and juice, FDA said, and would apply to any food facility, foreign or domestic, selling food in the U.S. The proposed rule features a staggered effective date, dependent on the size of the food facility. This proposed rule would also revise definitions in FDA’s registration regulations to clarify the scope of the exemption for farms from registration requirements.

The International Trade Commission is asking for comments by Jan. 15 on InterDigital’s Section 337 patent complaint against imports of certain wireless devices with 3G and/or 4G capabilities and components thereof from Samsung, Nokia, ZTE and Huawei. InterDigital is requesting the ITC issue limited exclusion and cease and desist orders. Examples of products that InterDigital is seeking to exclude include the Samsung Galaxy S, Galaxy Tab, and Galaxy Note; the Nokia Lumia 822 and 920; the ZTE Avail, JetPack, and 4G Hotspot; and the Huawei MediaPad, USBConnect, Activa, and My Touch. The Food and Drug Administration issued its weekly Enforcement Report for Jan. 2 that lists the status of recalls and field corrections for food, drugs, biologics, and devices. The report covers both domestic and foreign firms.
The Food and Drug Administration issued its proposed rule on Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventative Controls (HARPC). The proposal is currently on public inspection, and is set for publication in the Jan. 16 Federal Register. Pursuant to the Food Safety Modernization Act’s requirement that FDA establish a Foreign Supplier Verification Program, importers will have to verify their suppliers’ compliance with HARPC, among other food safety regulations, with some exceptions. “A proposed rule on foreign supplier verification is closely interconnected to this rule on preventive controls for human food, and is expected to publish soon,” said FDA in its HARPC proposal.
